It has been said that true communication between people doesn't exist; that we are intrinsically and utterly lonely.
No two people see the color red exactly the same way, and no two people feel exactly the same about love, death and other interesting things of life. Any "connections" we may think we have made with our loved-ones are strictly illusional.

In this analogy we are like disconnected nodes of awareness going through our spans of life; like walkers on fine threads scattered about in a bottomless vacuum going in random directions.
But my thoughts differ here - I think our only solace in life IS the knowledge that we are, in fact, not alone. Our constant acts of gregariousness - drinks with friends, dinner with a date, basketball game between colleagues are all simply, in essense, acts of the one inquiry that matters.
"Are you there?"
"Yes I am."
"Are you there?"
"Yes, I am."

These questions and answers manifested in all our social activities may be the one thing that keeps us going despite the hardships and hurts that surely come to us all, as humans.
And when you die, you can no longer answer "I am here!" to others - you have, in fact, "acheived 100% packet loss"
